Sofia Pinyak

How quickly time passes… It feels like just yesterday I was sharing the previous story, and today I want to tell you another one — a special one. In my series Made by Ukrainians, I introduce you to people it's impossible not to be proud of.

Today's story is about a very young, yet incredibly strong girl — Sofia Pinyak. She is only 14… but her talent is beyond her age. She is the youngest participant in my project.

Sofia is from the city of Dubno, Rivne region. She is self-taught — no art schools, no academies. Just an inner sense, heart, and a talent that cannot be taught — it can only be felt and carried within.

I clearly remember the moment I first saw her work. It was one of those moments when you simply cannot walk past. When something inside tells you: "People need to hear about this." Because stories like this are about more than talent — they are about strength. I really wanted to help her — and I'm grateful that I was able to.

A few days ago, an exhibition of Ukrainian artists took place in our state: "WE KNOW WHO THEY ARE… Artwork & Narratives from the Invasion of Ukraine." At the very last moment, Sofia's paintings were added to the exhibition — and I'm truly thankful to the organizers for that. Even before the exhibition opened, some of her paintings were already sold. By the end — almost none were left.

Even far from home. Even after everything she has been through. Behind her work is the story of a child who was forced to leave her home because of war. Who searched for safety. Who had to start life over in a new country — but did not break.

Despite her young age, Sofia already has strong achievements. She participated in the BETA Club State Conference (plein air painting), where she placed 4th; a statewide art exhibition where she won 2nd place; and yAEA — the Kentucky Art Education Association. And this is only the beginning of her journey. This summer, Sofia will represent herself at a national plein air painting competition — another important step for such a young yet confident artist.
